Primary, Lower El, and Upper El artists have been busy working on their fiber art pieces over the past few weeks. We have been studying the work of American Fiber Installation artist: Sheila Hicks. After discussing her work, the students have been working on their own pieces of artwork inspired by her art. Primary children are creating popsicle stick looms and weaving. Lower Elementary children are working on "up-cycled" rag rug weavings using hula hoop looms, finger knitting pieces to contribute to a collaborative piece of artwork. And Upper Elementary children are working on creating individual woven pieces using cardboard and wooden frame looms.

In celebration of Earth Day and our beautiful outdoor classroom space, peace tree, and garden areas we gathered as a full school this morning. Each class contributed their class Peace Rock to the Peace Tree space and we began and ended with the song "Peace is the World Smiling". What a wonderful opportunity to gather as a full school and celebrate the earth!
What a beautiful day we had this past weekend for our Annual Beautification Day here at TSM! There were so many families contributing to making our school a more beautiful place. In my Peace Tree group, we worked on creating Peace Rocks, making up-cycled stepping stones using broken plates, garden pots, and broken CD pieces, and painting bird houses. The outdoor classroom spaces are looking wonderful!
This year 5 artists were selected to participate in the CMS K-5 art show one from each grade level. These students were invited to Spirit Square gallery where there artwork is on display for the full month of March, Youth Art Month. This year I was lucky enough to participate in the hanging of the artwork as well which was such a great opportunity for collaborating with other CMS art educators!
Two sweet children were wearing the perfect shirt the other day! I couldn't help myself from capturing this moment. Art is my favorite sport too...well aside from some good ole' Panther Football!
I am thrilled to announce that our work with Victoria Sowers of Sandy Creek Weavers is finally hanging up in our TSM 1 Building. This piece created by our students with the support of our artist in residence was one of my favorite memories from this school year. After learning about the history of weaving and creating observational drawings of the 300 year old loom, we got to work on creating our large scale tapestry. Each child and staff member brought in an item that represented themselves and were able to contribute this item to the weaving piece. Ms. Victoria assisted the children in including their item while weaving up-cycled material through the loom. This was a beautiful experience for our students and I just love walking by our weaving each day!
After receiving the amazing book "Dave the Potter" by Laban Carrick Hill in our Media Center, Ms. Judy came to me with an amazing idea for a collaboration piece. Upper elementary artists have studied "Dave the Potter" and have learned about his background as a slave as well as his work on a kick wheel in order to throw pottery. He was such an inspiration to our students and they were thrilled to get working on pottery pieces of their own. Dave the Potter threw large pieces, mostly resembling vase forms on his kick wheel. He then added coils of clay to the tops of his pieces and inscribed his poetry on the side of his work. His couplet poetry described how he was feeling, his life, and memories. In media, UE students are creating their couplets to be displayed along with their pottery vases. I know UE artists are just as excited as I am to finish their artwork!
On March 1st, Trillium Springs Montessori hosted its second annual Night of the Arts. This year we expanded and not only had our art show with framed artwork from each child in our school, our book fair, and a musical performance; we also added: a poetry reading, hands on artwork, a mini-maker fair, and a physical fitness activity! Trillium Springs Artists were so proud of their work and have enjoyed viewing the gallery in out Media Center. This year we sold 36 pieces of artwork and raised $1,080 total from the framed artwork alone! Thank you TSM families for your generous support of our arts program!
After learning about the Naturalist Andy Goldsworthy and viewing images of his environmentally conscious artwork, Primary students went on a nature walk to find art materials for our own nature-inspired artwork. Throughout our nature walk, artists were encouraged to collect materials with a variety of textures, colors. We then came back to the art room to arrange our natural materials on our work spaces in order to create lovely Goldsworthy inspired art. Such a fun way to celebrate a warm day!
TSM families, if you all are looking for a fun, family friendly cultural experience you should check out Bechtler By Night. This once monthly event gives you free access to the Bechtler Gallery located in Uptown Charlotte. The event is held from 5:00pm-9:00pm on the third Friday of each month. My husband and I had a great time this past week and it would be an easy way to take the whole family to the museum for free! TSM students might even recognize a few artists with work on display including Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder. I definitely encourage TSM families to attend this event in the future!
